St. Michael Institute for Orthodox Studies presents

THIRD ANNUAL
ST. MICHAEL INSTITUTE FOR ORTHODOX STUDIES

St. MichaelHexaemeron has worked closely this year with the St. Michael Institute for Orthodox Studies to assist in the development of a conference theme, learning objectives and slate of outstanding presenters for a conference titled “Why a Crucified Messiah?”

Why a Crucified Messiah? is scheduled for Friday evening, Sept. 22 and all day Saturday, Sept. 22-23, at St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church on Hikes Lane in Louisville, Ky. See Agenda (pdf file, download free acrobat).

Conference Theme

On the leave-taking of the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, the conference theme addresses the central truth of our faith that God has consummately revealed Himself to the world upon the cross of death. Our presenters will explore what it means for us to co-die with Him that we may “live unto God.”

"Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him, knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For he that died, he died unto sin once, but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God." Ro 6: 8-10

Presenters

Rev. John Behr, the primary presenter will deliver a series of three lectures during the conference. Fr. John is Professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary in New York. After completing a degree in philosophy in London in 1987, he spent a year studying in Greece. He earned an M.Phil. in Eastern Christian Studies at Oxford University, under Bishop Kallistos (Ware), who subsequently supervised his doctoral work, which was examined by Andrew Louth and Rowan Williams, now Archbishop of Canterbury.

Fr. John has recently published a new book, The Mystery of Christ: Life in Death (Crestwood, NY: SVS Press, 2006). Those planning to participate in the conference are encouraged to read it in preparation for the interactive forum with the presenters on Saturday afternoon.

V. Rev. Michael Dahulich will be a respondent to one of Fr. John Behr's lectures. Fr. Michael is Dean of St. Tikhon Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Penn.

V. Rev. Michael Laffoon will also be a respondent to one of Fr. John Behr’s lectures. Fr. Michael is pastor of St. Mark Orthodox Church in Irvine, Calf.

Dr. David Bradshaw will act as facilitator for the discussion with our presenters. Bradshaw is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

V. Rev. Alexander Atty will offer a concluding summary of conference goals and objectives and the significance of its theme for living the Christian life. Fr. Alexander is pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church in Louisville and the guiding visionary for the Institute.

St. Michael Institute for Orthodox Studies is offered annually to enrich understanding of the essential tenets of Orthodox Christian theology as they are lived in liturgical rhythms; sacred music, art and architecture; ecclesiastical governance; fasting, prayer and almsgiving.
