"I've heard stories of heart conversion from seeing the great icon of the Holy Trinity by Rublev.
Ksenia's icons, too, are able to open the soul." Keri Wiederspahn (student)
Treasure in a Box
is a narrative companion to the largest body of Pokrovsky icons in North America. The late Ksenia Pokrovsky was a world-renowned master iconographer who immigrated to the United States from Moscow, Russia in 1991, six months before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
During the 1960s, Pokrovsky gave up a promising career as a biophysicist at Moscow University to become a leader of a clandestine movement that revived the tradition of icon painting in her homeland where it was forbidden by law.
Treasure in a Box describes Pokrovsky's theological ensemble of images housed in a small space that is St. Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lexington, Kentucky.
